Design and How! – Virginia Lee Burton Demetrios’ Theory of Design

After you take in the special exhibition Designed and Hand-Blocked by the Folly Cove Designers, join Heidi Horner for a library discussion focused on the life of the Folly Cove Designers’ founder and teacher, Virginia Lee Burton Demetrios. Heidi, who processed and arranged the Museum’s “VLB” archival collection (including new acquisitions in 2019), will share art and process work from Virginia Lee Burton Demetrios’ multiple careers, from her work as a children’s book author and illustrator, as a teacher of design to the Folly Cove Designers, and as a prolific designer herself. Read highlights from Burton’s correspondence, and see her process from rough sketches, to pen and ink drawings, to detailed print designs. Large instructional posters show her design principles and the homework exercises each designer was expected to complete. Heidi will share draft material from Burton’s unfinished and unpublished manuscript, “Design and How!,” and together we will discuss the unique design pedagogy Virginia Lee Burton Demetrios used to teach the Folly Cove Designers— to impressive and inspiring effect.
