The Red Cottage Society

The Cape Ann Museum’s young patron society for art and culture lovers.

Through social and educational events the Red Cottage Society connects individuals in their 20s, 30s and 40s who share an interest in Cape Ann’s rich history and vibrant culture.

The group’s name stems from a favorite Cape Ann haunt of some of America’s greatest 20th century artists. During the summer of 1914, painter John Sloan sought refuge from the heat of New York City in Gloucester renting a small red cottage at the head of Rocky Neck. He would return to the “little red cottage” for four more summers, drawing a circle of other artists around him.

Cape Ann has inspired and harbored artists for well over a century, and since 1873, the Cape Ann Museum has honored their work by collecting and caring for it for multiple generations to enjoy.

Join the Red Cottage Society and be a part of the Cape Ann Museum ... one of the finest small museums in the country.
