Gloucester Daily Times: Cape Ann Museum to showcase local children’s artwork

A small wall of color went up at Cape Ann Museum’s CAM Green, showcasing artwork of hundreds of local schoolchildren.
Now in its fourth year, the museum’s education initiative wants to share the abundant youthful talent with the community.
The outdoor display of student work will run May 7 to June 1.
The eighth-grade student exhibition, “Facing Back, Facing Forward,” was installed Thursday on the stone wall at the center of the CAM Green campus, 13 Poplar St.
The smaller works that are pieced together to form the art installation actually began with each student documenting their facial profile. It was out of their own personal profiles that these individual artworks were created.
Members of Gloucester’s Cornerstone Creative, a youth mentorship woodworking and craftsmanship program, created the wooden framework for the installation.
The other effort this year involves local second-graders with their project called “Feathered Friends.” Students learned the story of the Folly Cove Designers and made their own Styrofoam print in the shape of a seagull. Their work is displayed in an installation that involves Cassie, CAM’s family-friendly sea serpent based on the local legend of 1817 fame.
This year, the museum’s school initiative and its educators reached more than 600 students, about 300 in each of the two grades.
To date, the museum school initiative, in partnership with Cape Ann public schools, has reached more than 2,500 students since 2021.
