This display featured a collection of Indigenous artifacts gathered by Frank G. Speck (1881-1950), a noted professor of anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania and long-time summer resident of Gloucester’s Riverview neighborhood. Among the objects Speck collected from the area around his Riverview home are tools thought to have been used for fishing, hunting, and food preparation.

The communities of Cape Ann are located on the traditional and ancestral homelands of the Pawtucket people and their neighbors the Massachusett, Nipmuc, Penacook, and Wampanoag tribes. We recognize and honor those Indigenous peoples who have lived in this territory for more than 10,000 years, are here now, and will be here for generations to come.
