This tour starts in the Cape Ann Museum’s newly reinstalled Fitz Henry Lane Gallery, then continues with a walk down to the Lane House overlooking Gloucester’s working waterfront. The Museum is fortunate to have the world’s single largest collection of works by Lane, America’s premier marine painter of the mid-19th century. On view in the gallery are drawings, lithographs and oil paintings, all preserved and displayed in the town in which they were created. Recent improvements to the Lane Gallery bring the space more in line with the virtual resource Fitz Henry Lane Online, giving visitors a broader appreciation of the artist’s amazing talents. After viewing the Gallery, the tour will move on to Lane’s house, otherwise known as “the Stone Jug,” giving participants the chance to walk in the artist’s shoes.

Guided walking tours are held rain or shine and last about 1½ hours; participants should be comfortable being on their feet for that amount of time. It is required that all participants wear a face mask. Dogs are not permitted.
