SUMMARY:CAM Talk - Mending Movement: Sail Repair in the Early Maritime Atlantic\, with Emily Whitted
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, August 2\, 2025\n3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.\nJanet & William Ellery James Center\nCAM Green\, 13 Poplar Street\, Gloucester\, MA 01930\nCAM Members Free\, Non-Members $10\nRegistration is required as space is limited. \nIn the age of sail\, the efficient movement of people and goods around the early maritime Atlantic world relied on the strength of woven fabric and the means to repair it successfully. Sails underwent extensive wear and required regular maintenance and repair work completed by sailors onboard ships while at sea or by sailmakers while in ports. By focusing on ship sails as a technology of maritime movement\, sailcloth repair offers insights into the value of repair practices within maritime businesses. Using extant material culture and archival documents from New England’s many maritime collections\, this presentation traces the history of sail repair inside sailmakers’ lofts\, on the decks of ships\, and within marine insurance policies.  \nEmily Whitted is a PhD candidate in History at the University of Massachusetts Amherst whose work focuses on early American history\, material culture\, and public history. Her dissertation project\, “Darned\, Patched\, and Mended: Repairing Textiles in Early America\,” examines early American textile repair work as an integral\, everyday practice completed with needles and thread to maintain fabric’s life cycles within homes\, ships\, and military camps. She also holds a M.A. in American Material Culture from the Winterthur Program at the University of Delaware.  \n  \nImage Credit: Mended sails. Image courtesy of the speaker.

SUMMARY:Coffee & Conversations: Painting the Gloucester Waterfront
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, September 18\, 2025\n10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.\nCarlson Education Center\, CAM Green\n13 Poplar Street\, Gloucester\, MA\nCAM Members Free\, Non-Members $5\nRegistration required as space is limited \nPainters flocked to Cape Ann in the latter part of the 19th century\, drawn by its beauty and light\, and by the picturesque Gloucester Harbor with its majestic fishing schooners. Tempering that beauty was the grittiness of the fishing trade: the dangers of navigating an uncertain and often turbulent sea\, resulting in many deaths and leaving wives and children without a source of support. With the rise of capitalism in America\, ship owners often saw the large supply of immigrant fishermen as expendable\, with newcomers ready to replace those lost at sea. Living conditions for underpaid fishermen could be less than ideal. Beauty and the opposing difficult conditions provided inspiration for those who painted here. Join us to view a painting by American Impressionist Carl Peters to explore these themes. This conversation will be led by CAM Docent\, Bruce Shaw. \nImage Credit: The Fort (formerly thought to be Portuguese Hill)\, Carl Peters\, n.d. Between 1914 and 1918\, Sloan—already a leading figure in the Ashcan School—found fresh inspiration along Cape Ann’s rugged shores and vibrant harbors\, producing nearly 300 works that captured the essence of Gloucester’s landscapes and daily life. From the moody moors of Dogtown to the bustling trolley lines of Main Street\, Sloan’s paintings reflect not only his evolving color philosophy and compositional daring\, but also a deep emotional connection to the region. Join this week’s Coffee and Conversations as we explore how Cape Ann shaped his artistic legacy and left an indelible mark on American realism.  \nThis program will repeat on October 23. \n  \nImage Credit: Gloucester Inlet\, John Sloan\, 1914\, Oil on canvas\, Gift of the Dr. Joseph E. SUMMARY:CAM Talk: How the Granite Industry Changed the Face(s) of Cape Ann\, by Susanna Natti
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 25\, 2025\n3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.\nJanet & William Ellery James Center\, CAM Green\n13 Poplar Street\, Gloucester\, MA 01930\nFree for CAM members\, $10 for Non-Members. \nThe talk is currently at full capacity but it will be live-streamed on our Facebook page and the recorded talk will be available through our Vimeo page and on our Past Program Recordings page. More information to come.  \nThe granite industry changed both the landscape and the demographics of Cape Ann in the nineteenth century. Join Susanna Natti for a CAM Talk to explore the social history of the granite industry’s largely immigrant workers.  \nSusanna Natti is a Gloucester native\, growing up on the edge of a quarry in Lanesville.  After a career of illustrating children’s books\, she has found a new interest in local history and has been following a trail of questions and answers centered around the changing population of northern Cape Ann caused by the rapid expansion of the granite industry in the last half of the 19th century. Susanna’s interest in the story of her Finnish grandparents has led to a widening circle of questions\, including wondering what life was like during the period of the great European migration around the turn of the last century and what it might have been like for the newcomers and for the population already here.  The granite industry changed more than the landscape on Cape Ann. It also changed the faces of the population. \n  \nImage Credit: Eino Natti (1909-1975) Polyphemus (detail). 1950. SUMMARY:Coffee & Conversations: Augustus Bühler
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 30\, 2025\n10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.\nCarlson Education Center\, CAM Green\n13 Poplar Street\, Gloucester\, MA\nCAM Members Free\, Non-Members $5\nRegistration required as space is limited \nJoin us for a deep dive into a single piece from the Collection with a CAM Docent\, Linda Mahajan. Begin with conversation\, a short presentation\, and complimentary coffee at the Carlson Center\, then move to the James Center to view the original.  \nCome learn about Augustus Bühler\, a pivotal figure in Gloucester’s rich artistic heritage. Born in New York City to Prussian parents and trained in Boston and Paris\, Bühler began summering in Gloucester in 1885 and eventually made it his permanent studio home. His evocative marine paintings\, especially those depicting the lives of North Atlantic fishermen\, captured both the heroism and quiet dignity of Gloucester’s working waterfront. Best known for his iconic painting Man at the Wheel\, which inspired the city’s famed Fisherman’s Memorial\, Bühler believed artists were historians of their time—an ethos that shaped his deeply personal portrayals of the sea and its people. We’ll explore how Bühler’s art helped define Gloucester’s visual identity and continues to resonate with generations of viewers.  \nThis program will repeat on November 6. \n  \nImage Credit: Fisherman (detail)\, Augustus Waldeck Bühler\, c. 1895\, Oil on canvas Gift of Dorothy Buhler\, the artist’s daughter\, 1980\, Accession #2202.3.

SUMMARY:CAM Talk: Don’t Take it for “Granite”—The Intriguing Story of Butter\, Stone and the Economics of Cape Ann’s Granite Industry\, by Les Bartlett
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, November 8\, 2025\n3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.\nJanet & William Ellery James Center\, CAM Green\n13 Poplar Street\, Gloucester\, MA 01930\nFree for CAM members\, $10 for Non-Members.\nRegistration is required as space is limited. \nHow was butter connected to the quarrying of stone? Learn this and more about the social history and economics of the Cape Ann Granite Industry.\n \nLeslie Bartlett is originally from Epsom\, NH; he has lived on Cape Ann for nearly 50 years. His fine art photography of granite quarries on Cape Ann was featured in the main gallery of the Cape Ann Museum -October 2007 through January 2008. From Cape Ann he travelled to Barre\, VT in 2008 and created a master project based on the lives of the granite sculptors from the 19th century through the 20th century. “Give Me Your Hands – the Legacy of the Barre Stone Sculptors and Their Stone” received a primary featured installation at Michigan State University Law School in 2011. His research on the lives of the stone workers throughout NE forms the basis for his forthcoming title: “BREAK Stone\, Water\, Heart\, the Culture of Cape Ann Granite.” Now in 2025\, EKKLESIA—a 9 foot by 30 foot image from a quarry wall in Rockport—has found permanent installation occupying 3 floors at the Sawyer Free Library\, titled ‘Cape Ann Quarry Mural Wall.’ \n  \nImage Credit: Alfred J.
