Each session features a work of art or object that is new to view—whether a recent acquisition or a work newly installed in the galleries. \nThe program begins in the Education Room at our Downtown Campus with a brief introduction and visual context before moving into the galleries for an extended exploration of the featured work. Guided by observation\, curiosity\, and conversation\, participants are encouraged to share ideas\, consider different perspectives\, and discover new connections together. \nThis week for Artful Conversations \nThis program takes a deeper look at Frederick Mulhaupt’s Morning\, Gloucester Harbor offers a vivid window into the working waterfront of 1920. In this short\, lively program\, visitors explore how Mulhaupt’s luminous brushwork captures a harbor in transition—where sail\, steam\, and local maritime life meet. It’s an engaging way to experience Gloucester’s history through one unforgettable painting. \nCharles Browne studied art history in college and went on to practice architecture in New England and Texas. He painted in oils during high school and later in watercolors. Recently\, he has been working in both mediums. Charles has lived on Cape Ann—both year-round and summers—on multiple occasions throughout his life and learned to sail as a teenager on Sandy Bay. Recently retired\, he and his wife have returned to Cape Ann for good. He was inspired to become a docent at the Cape Ann Museum for the chance to learn in depth about the area that has meant so much to him—including its art\, industry\, and Gloucester’s colorful history as America’s oldest seaport. He enjoys giving Highlights Tours at the Museum\, which touch on all these subjects. \n\nImage Credit: Frederick J. Mulhaupt (1871-1938)\, Morning\, Gloucester Harbor \, c. 1920\, oil on canvas.
