SUMMARY:CAM Talk: Cape Ann Museum – Then\, Now\, and Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, September 13\, 2026\n2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.\nAuditorium\, Downtown Campus\n27 Pleasant Street\, Gloucester\, MA 01930\nRegistration Required\nCAM Members $5\, Non-Members $15 (includes General Admission).\nTickets do not include admission to the special exhibition Avery\, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea. \n\nJoin the Bayliss Society at the Cape Ann Museum on September 13 for the closing program of this year’s Jonathan Bayliss Society annual conference\, “Gloucester’s Acropolis: Defining the City Then and Now.” This final session features a series of short talks exploring the role and influence of Cape Ann Museum in the community life of Gloucester throughout its existence\, with a glimpse toward an exciting future as well.   \nSpeakers are CAM’s Director Oliver Barker\, Chief Curator Martha Oaks\, and former Museum volunteer Deanie Hancock French. Deanie’s father\, the major American sculptor Walker Hancock\, was involved for many years in the development of what was then called the Cape Ann Historical Association. \nAbout the Conference \nNovelist Jonathan Bayliss (1926–2009) coined the term Acropolis to describe the cluster of civic institutions rising above Gloucester Harbor—City Hall\, Sawyer Free Library\, the Museum\, and neighboring landmarks. This year’s conference brings that idea to life through talks\, walks\, and readings from September 11–13\, exploring how this hillside cultural district has shaped Gloucester from the 19th century to today. \nThe conference is organized by the Jonathan Bayliss Society in collaboration with Cape Ann Museum\, Gloucester Writers Center\, and Sawyer Free Library\, with support from the Gloucester Cultural Council\, Mass Cultural Council\, and the Brace Cove Foundation. \nMore information is available at www.jonathanbayliss.org/acropolis. \n Image Credits: Bayliss Society.

SUMMARY:Artful Conversations: Sierra ‘Autumn’ Henries with her Father\, Hawk Henries\, 2024\, by Matika Wilbur
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, September 17\, 2026 and Thursday\, September 24\, 2026\n12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.\nCAM Education Room\nDowntown Campus\n27 Pleasant Street\, Gloucester\, MA\nCAM Members $5\, Non-Members (Adult) $25 (includes admission to the General Museum) \nAdditional price types are available upon checkout \nTickets do not include admission to the special exhibition Avery\, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea\n Join Us Mid-Day for Artful Conversations \n\nTake a midday pause and experience one work of art in depth.  \nArtful Conversations are informal\, docent-led gallery experiences that invite visitors to slow down\, look closely\, and engage in thoughtful conversation. Each session features a work of art or object that is new to view—whether a recent acquisition or a work newly installed in the galleries.  \nThe program begins in the Education Room at our Downtown Campus with a brief introduction and visual context before moving into the galleries for an extended exploration of the featured work. Guided by observation\, curiosity\, and conversation\, participants are encouraged to share ideas\, consider different perspectives\, and discover new connections together.  \nThis week for Artful Conversations  \nIn 2025\, CAM acquired two 2023 photographs by Matika Wilbur as part of the Museum’s Native Initiatives\, a project that culminated in a landmark exhibition of Wilbur’s work at the CAM Green. Wilbur’s work reshapes how Indigenous Peoples are represented across the United States\, centering contemporary Native identity and celebrating the vibrancy of Indigenous culture today.  \nPlease join CAM docent Maggie Rosa for an engaging conversation as she reflects on what these photographs reveal—about the photographer\, about the individuals portrayed\, and about the evolving stories they invite us to understand more deeply.  \nBorn and raised in England\, Maggie Rosa moved to the Chicago in 1968 to work as a research technician at the University of Chicago. During her eight years in Chicago\, she married Joe and obtained her PhD. The two of them did post-doctoral research at Yale and then moved to Cambridge to join the nascent biotech world. They eventually built a weekend home in Gloucester. In 2001 they “saw the light” and moved here permanently to participate in this great community. Maggie is an active volunteer in local organizations\, most recently the City Hall Restoration Commission\, Gloucester Education Foundation\, Cape Ann Museum\, and Generous Gardeners. As a Cape Ann Museum docent\, she serves as an ambassador for Gloucester by introducing visitors\, especially cruise ship visitors\, to Cape Ann’s history and culture. CAM’s Fresnel lighthouse lens is her favorite piece in the Museum because it exemplifies how science\, technology and art were combined to address an urgent need in maritime safety. \n\n Image Credits: Matika Wilbur\, Sierra ‘Autumn’ Henries with her Father\, Hawk Henries\, 2024. This lecture explores the exhibition through the lens of influence\, considering exchanges not only between our three protagonists but also with other figures haunting the beach\, from Sophocles and T.S. Eliot to Matisse and more. \n─────── \nFull Day\nFriday\, September 18\, 2026\n10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.\nBagged lunch is included. \nMorning Program\nAtmospheric Geography and Abstraction at Sea\nby James Lawrence \nThe process of detaching abstract forms from their origins in the physical world is seldom as straightforward as commentary and theory might lead us to believe. Adolph Gottlieb’s mature style embodies several tactics that gained traction during the 1930s\, some of which exploited the distinctive traits of coastal and maritime phenomena. This examination of his technique considers what happens to abstraction when it leaves dry land\, how Gottlieb harnessed its currents\, and how we might assess the results within the development of western painting. \nMilton Avery: A Life of Experimentation\nby Edith Devaney \nThis lecture brings together and examines Avery’s autodidactic nature\, interrogating how this\, along with his lifelong experimentation in composition\, form\, and technique ensured that he not only sustained the position of being a painter of great interest during his career and to this day\, but that it was these very qualities which proved to be so compelling to artists who have followed in his wake. \n  \nAfternoon Program\nMark Rothko — From Cape Ann to Provincetown: The Arc of a Career\nby Dr. Christopher Rothko & Dr. Kate Rothko Prizel \nAn examination of Rothko’s development and output\, looking at the importance of place\, colleagues\, and subject throughout his career. SUMMARY:CAM Talk – Exhibition Series: T. S. Eliot Among the Painters\, by Dr. John D. Morgenstern
DESCRIPTION:Due to popular demand we were able to open a select number of seats for this lecture! \nSaturday\, September 19\, 2026\n2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.\nDowntown Campus Auditorium\n27 Pleasant Street\, Gloucester\, MA 01930\nRegistration Required \nThis lecture will be recorded & livestreamed. \nCAM Members $5\, Non-Members (Adult) $30.\nAdditional prices available when registering.\nTickets do not include admission to the special exhibition. \n\nClick here to become a member and save! \nWhile summering together on Cape Ann in the 1930s\, Milton Avery\, Adolph Gottlieb\, and Mark Rothko spent their days painting luminous seascapes and evenings reading aloud the poetry of T. S. Eliot. From his early masterpiece\, “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock\,” to Four Quartets\, Eliot’s poetry returns time and again to the Gloucester seascapes he encountered near his family’s summer home. Put in conversation\, poet and painters reveal Gloucester was more than a shared backdrop—it became a generative landscape where questions of universality\, identity\, and modernism were forged across mediums. \nDr. John D. Morgenstern (DPhil\, Oxford) is a scholar of twentieth-century literature and the arts who has taught in England\, Germany\, and the United States. He is the coeditor of The Edinburgh Companion to T. S. Eliot and the Arts (2016)\, coeditor of Modernism in Wonderland: Legacies of Lewis Carroll (2024)\, and the founding editor of The T. S. Eliot Studies Annual. He now serves as an associate librarian at Emory University. \nImage Credit: Milton Avery\, Gloucester Dawn\, c. 1921. Oil on artist board\, 20 x 24 in.
