SUMMARY:Coffee & Conversations: What is a Schooner?
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, September 4\, 2025\n10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.\nCarlson Education Center\, CAM Green\n13 Poplar Street\, Gloucester\, MA\nCAM Members Free\, Non-Members $5\nRegistration required as space is limited \nUp to the early 20th century\, schooners were the workhorses of the Gloucester fisheries under sail. But visitors to the Cape Ann Museum have often asked\, “What exactly is a Schooner?”  This presentation will provide an easy-to-remember definition of a schooner and will show its evolution from a small inshore fishing boat to a big offshore vessel. A large ship model from the Museum’s collection and photos will illustrate the presentation. This conversation will be led by CAM Docent\, Gail Anderson.     \nYou are invited to join us every Thursday for a unique experience. Led by a CAM docent\, these deep dives into a single artwork or object from the Collection will begin with conversation\, a short presentation and complimentary coffee at the Carlson Education Center\, followed by a special trip to the James Center to view the object being discussed. No special knowledge needed! Just a curiosity to learn more in a small group setting and enjoy a unique experience.  \n  \nImage Credit: Thomas A. SUMMARY:Coffee & Conversations: Painting the Gloucester Waterfront
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, September 18\, 2025\n10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.\nCarlson Education Center\, CAM Green\n13 Poplar Street\, Gloucester\, MA\nCAM Members Free\, Non-Members $5\nRegistration required as space is limited \nPainters flocked to Cape Ann in the latter part of the 19th century\, drawn by its beauty and light\, and by the picturesque Gloucester Harbor with its majestic fishing schooners. Tempering that beauty was the grittiness of the fishing trade: the dangers of navigating an uncertain and often turbulent sea\, resulting in many deaths and leaving wives and children without a source of support. With the rise of capitalism in America\, ship owners often saw the large supply of immigrant fishermen as expendable\, with newcomers ready to replace those lost at sea. Living conditions for underpaid fishermen could be less than ideal. Beauty and the opposing difficult conditions provided inspiration for those who painted here. Join us to view a painting by American Impressionist Carl Peters to explore these themes. This conversation will be led by CAM Docent\, Bruce Shaw. \nImage Credit: The Fort (formerly thought to be Portuguese Hill)\, Carl Peters\, n.d.
