Winter Shorts 2017

January 21, 2017 @ 10:00 am

Captain Elias Davis House

Join the docents of the Cape Ann Museum on a variety of themed mini tours. Several twenty minute tours will be offered, beginning on the hour and on the half hour. Each tour will touch on a particular area within the Museum’s collections. Docents have created tours around their favorite topics, including Gloucester Fishermen, Women Artists of Cape Ann and 19th Century Selfies, among others. Participants are encouraged to spend the entire day at the Museum, enjoying one, two or all of the mini tours.

Tours are free for CAM members and Cape Ann residents or with Museum admission. Tours are “first come, first served” (space is limited – no reservations).

Schedule

10:00 a.m.   In Plain Sight: Creatures of the Imagination
There is a peaceable kingdom that lives within the Museum’s collection. This tour encourages exploration of the Museum’s non-human subjects.

10:30 a.m.   The Story of the Fresnel Lens
Explore how science, engineering and politics impacted American maritime safety. This tour welcomes guests to stand face to face with a rare first-order Fresnel lens.

11:00 a.m.   A Stairway Trio
Reflections from Vermeer to Picasso in three personal portraits.

11:30 a.m.   Harvesting the Sea: Gloucestermen in the Heyday of Fishing Under Sail
More than 1,000 schooners called Gloucester their home port during the glory days of fishing from just after the Civil War to the early 20th century. Both ships and men were called “Gloucestermen” — the ships tall, fast, and beautiful; the men tough, brave, tireless, and justly proud of their work.

12:00 p.m.   Wood You?
Explore the versatility of wood from common kitchen items to fine furniture to exquisite sculptures by James McClellan. You won’t take wood for granted again!

12:30 p.m.   Nineteenth Century Selfies
Take a trip through the portraits of the Cape Ann Gallery, complete with stories about the subjects and the artists.  Strike a pose in front of the portrait you like and take a selfie home with you.

1:00 p.m.   Fifteen Shades of Blue
Experience the impact of blue — the color of sea and sky, symbolic of trust, loyalty and wisdom. This tour explores works of art in the Museum that make use of this favorite color.

Tours are also being offered on Sunday, January 22 starting at 1:30 p.m. Find a schedule here.
