Communities like Gloucester that once depended on wild foods, in particular fish, have an especially interesting place in history. The relationship between food production and culture is represented in remarkable and surprising ways in the Cape Ann Museum, and this talk explores those multiple connections.

James McGregor is the author of five books on the structure and social history of world cities. His most recent book, Back to the Garden: Nature and the Mediterranean World from Prehistory to the Present was published this year by Yale University Press. He is an emeritus professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Georgia and now lives in Cambridge, MA.
