This coming of age tale recounts the journey of 15-year-old Harvey Cheyne, the spoiled son of a wealthy railroad magnate, who is washed overboard during a transatlantic crossing. Rescued by a Gloucester schooner off the coast of Newfoundland, the boy endures a three-month voyage in which he learns to love the sea and eventually earns his place among the crew.
