To answer the perennial question “Where Are You From?”, educator and community justice organizer Toni Waldron considers the complexity of Black journeys around origin and belonging. In an ever-shifting global landscape, questions of origin are neither neutral nor apolitical and can offer opportunities to recognize who lives on Cape Ann. Thinking with Black and Brown scholars and activists who have laid the groundwork for a radical praxis of speculative fabrication and conjecture, Waldron will open the conversation with questions such as “How do we engage with and expand historical narratives?” and “What happens we return to the archives to “see” and learn from those who have been written out of and erased from history?” Waldron will share relevant scholars who are exploring this field and her own conclusions from visiting the CAM Library & Archives to see what is and is not included.

Toni Waldron lives her mission- transforming traditional educational spaces to center the voices of those most pressed to the margins. Through her engagement with radical critical consciousness building and dialogue, her work uses a gender expansive, decolonial, anti-racist framework. Waldron coordinated the first city-wide Gloucester Juneteenth Celebration at Stage Fort Park in 2021 and at CAM Green in 2022. Born and raised in London, England, she brings unique perspectives as a multiracial, multiethnic immigrant to her work. She is a board member of the Backyard Growers and a member of CAM’s Community Engagement Committee. Waldron has a M.Ed. from Tufts University and is the Education Coordinator for the Royall House & Slave Quarters in Medford, MA.
