Annual Copley Society Lecture: Meghan Weeks

“I make paintings as a response to the spaces and structures before me. While my work follows a tradition of representational landscape painting, I aim to convey places as they are in the present. Light conditions and atmosphere lead the way when selecting a subject. An illuminated pane or a dynamic shadow can render an otherwise mundane scene compelling enough to hold that moment in time on the surface of a canvas.” – Meghan Weeks

Meghan Weeks studied architecture and museum curating while working in the cultural heritage sector for over a decade before deciding to pursue art full-time. She attended the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, Yale University in New Haven, and The Winsor School in Boston. Prior to her residency on Cape Ann, Weeks has held residencies at The Steeple Arts Centre, Newburgh, Scotland, among others.

The Residency was created by the Charles Family Foundation, in collaboration with the Cape Ann Museum and Boston’s Copley Society of Art, as a dedication to and promotion of the North Shore and Boston art communities. There will be a reception to follow at the Charles Fine Arts Gallery, 196 Main Street, Gloucester. Free and open to the public. Reservations required.
