About the Opportunity
The Cape Ann Museum (CAM) is a great regional museum, a treasure and force unto itself on Cape Ann, at the epicenter of artistic and marine history in the northeast. The Museum’s nationally significant collections include fine and decorative arts, artifacts from the major industries of the area - the fisheries and granite quarrying as well as an extensive Library and Archives. In just a few short months, CAM will unveil a Winslow Homer exhibition entitled Homer at the Beach, which is unprecedented in scale including loans from over 40 institutions and individuals from across the United States. Recent changes in leadership build on the Museum’s strong history and reposition CAM as an extraordinary Cape Ann landmark.
In April 2019, CAM welcomed a new Museum Director, Oliver Barker, and Charles Esdaile assumed the role of Chair Board. Together, this leadership along with CAM’s Board of Directors are galvanizing the Museum in exciting ways in preparation for its upcoming 150th Anniversary and the City of Gloucester’s 400th Anniversary in 2023. In this context the Museum is currently building a Collections Center campus to address the need for expanded collections storage and the desire for additional exhibition and community programming space. This campus is a critical component of the Museum’s 2018–2023 Strategic Plan and will provide many ways to engage, excite and connect with Museum audiences.
The Museum’s Library/ Archives are integral to CAM’s operations and provide a major public resource for the study of the history of Cape Ann, past and present. Access to these collections and related scholarship is of paramount importance and the Museum now seeks an individual to join its dynamic team with the ability to work collaboratively across departments, with a strong cohort of volunteers and with the visiting public.
Reporting to the Museum Director, the Librarian/Archivist will oversee the day-to -day operations of the Library/Archives, including collection care, organization and development, reference, access, outreach, arrangement and description. The Librarian/Archivist will work in partnership with the Museum Director, Curatorial and Education departments and other CAM Staff, serving as a liaison to the community, and will also staff the Museum’s Collections Committee.
- Assess the Museum’s Library/Archives collections with a view to planning for and implementing their relocation to CAM’s new Collections Center in spring 2020.
- Oversee the preservation and safe keeping of the Library/Archives collections, including handling, storage, conservation and security.
- Identify, in tandem with the Museum’s Curatorial staff, a comprehensive collections cataloguing software, assist with its procurement and work with CAM staff and volunteers to ensure its full implementation.
- Respond to daily research inquiries (both in-house and external) and manage all rights and reproduction requests related to the Library/Archives collections, including requests made of the Museum’s growing photography holdings.
- Engage CAM colleagues, volunteers and the general public in the Library/Archives resources and services.
- Devise a digital strategy for the Library/Archive collections, including the digitization of over 90 separate finding aids making them fully discoverable and accessible online.
- Identify opportunities for collections development by researching additional grant possibilities, facilitating donor relations and acquisitions in concert with the Museum’s Curatorial staff and the Collections Committee.
- Conduct bi-annual surveys of the Library/Archives collections to ensure their ongoing stewardship.
- Partner closely with all other Museum departments to ensure full integration of Library/Archives and work closely with special exhibitions and public programming to expand knowledge and access to the Library/Archive collections.
- Assist in other duties as assigned by the Museum’s Director to support the operations and activities of the Museum.
- Recruit and supervise interns, docents and volunteers as needed.
- Master’s degree in library information science from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent with advanced coursework in archival management.
- 3 years professional work experience in archives and special collections required.
- Knowledge of current issues and trends in museum-based archives, including the best practice procedures for managing, maintaining and preserving archival records and collections.
- Proficiency in both Mac/PC and MS Office, Google Apps and archival information systems such as Extensis Portfolio, FileMaker Pro and EmbARK or related collections management software.
- Poise, maturity, flexibility and aptitude to work as a collaborative team player with Board members, colleagues, volunteers and the general public.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and interpersonal.
- Appreciation of the Museum’s mission and ability to be an effective spokesperson.
- Knowledge of Cape Ann history and art preferred.
- Ability to work some nights, early mornings and weekends as events and meetings require.
- Capability to lift up to 40 Ibs.
