Set on the CAM Green\, this hands-on session introduces participants to working with pastel through an exercise from Jermain’s newly published book The Nature of Color\, which presents her innovative\, nature-based approach to understanding and using color in art. \nNote: Materials included. Class time is primarily outdoors; please dress appropriately for the weather.  \nKimberly Collins Jermain is a landscape painter\, teacher\, and architectural color designer whose work uses the power of color to change how we experience the world. Deanie’s father\, the major American sculptor Walker Hancock\, was involved for many years in the development of what was then called the Cape Ann Historical Association. \nAbout the Conference \nNovelist Jonathan Bayliss (1926–2009) coined the term Acropolis to describe the cluster of civic institutions rising above Gloucester Harbor—City Hall\, Sawyer Free Library\, the Museum\, and neighboring landmarks. Each session features a work of art or object that is new to view—whether a recent acquisition or a work newly installed in the galleries.  \nThe program begins in the Education Room at our Downtown Campus with a brief introduction and visual context before moving into the galleries for an extended exploration of the featured work. Guided by observation\, curiosity\, and conversation\, participants are encouraged to share ideas\, consider different perspectives\, and discover new connections together.  \nThis week for Artful Conversations  \nIn 2025\, CAM acquired two 2023 photographs by Matika Wilbur as part of the Museum’s Native Initiatives\, a project that culminated in a landmark exhibition of Wilbur’s work at the CAM Green. Wilbur’s work reshapes how Indigenous Peoples are represented across the United States\, centering contemporary Native identity and celebrating the vibrancy of Indigenous culture today.  \nPlease join CAM docent Maggie Rosa for an engaging conversation as she reflects on what these photographs reveal—about the photographer\, about the individuals portrayed\, and about the evolving stories they invite us to understand more deeply.  \nBorn and raised in England\, Maggie Rosa moved to the Chicago in 1968 to work as a research technician at the University of Chicago. During her eight years in Chicago\, she married Joe and obtained her PhD. The two of them did post-doctoral research at Yale and then moved to Cambridge to join the nascent biotech world. They eventually built a weekend home in Gloucester. In 2001 they “saw the light” and moved here permanently to participate in this great community. Maggie is an active volunteer in local organizations\, most recently the City Hall Restoration Commission\, Gloucester Education Foundation\, Cape Ann Museum\, and Generous Gardeners. As a Cape Ann Museum docent\, she serves as an ambassador for Gloucester by introducing visitors\, especially cruise ship visitors\, to Cape Ann’s history and culture. Adolph Gottlieb’s mature style embodies several tactics that gained traction during the 1930s\, some of which exploited the distinctive traits of coastal and maritime phenomena. This examination of his technique considers what happens to abstraction when it leaves dry land\, how Gottlieb harnessed its currents\, and how we might assess the results within the development of western painting. \nMilton Avery: A Life of Experimentation\nby Edith Devaney \nThis lecture brings together and examines Avery’s autodidactic nature\, interrogating how this\, along with his lifelong experimentation in composition\, form\, and technique ensured that he not only sustained the position of being a painter of great interest during his career and to this day\, but that it was these very qualities which proved to be so compelling to artists who have followed in his wake. \n  \nAfternoon Program\nMark Rothko — From Cape Ann to Provincetown: The Arc of a Career\nby Dr. Christopher Rothko & Dr. Kate Rothko Prizel \nAn examination of Rothko’s development and output\, looking at the importance of place\, colleagues\, and subject throughout his career. Adolph Gottlieb’s mature style embodies several tactics that gained traction during the 1930s\, some of which exploited the distinctive traits of coastal and maritime phenomena. DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, September 20\, 2026\n10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.\nBabson Boulder Parking\nCherry Street\, Gloucester\, MA 01930\nCAM Members $15\, Non-Members $25.\nRegistration Required \nOn Cape Ann\, the name “Dogtown” conjures up many things—vast woodlands and trails; stone walls and cellar holes; tales of witches and widows; an ill-fated bullfighter; pastures\, picnics and blueberries; a sea of rocks. Dogtown is all of these things and more. But first\, it is a place where proud people once lived and worked\, at the center of Gloucester\, for nearly 150 years—until it became “Dogtown” and died out.  \nThis tour will take you down the main roads of this early settlement\, to meet some of the people\, see where they lived and hear their stories. You will learn how Dogtown got its name\, why people left\, and how it has changed in the 200 years since the last house came down. You will hear about writers and artists who were inspired here\, and reservoirs that were built here. Finally\, you will see some of the inspirational word-boulders along the trails that are the lasting legacy of entrepreneur and philanthropist Roger Babson (1875-1967)\, and a symbol of the enduring nature of this special place called Dogtown.  \nThe Historic Dogtown walking tour is almost three miles and will take approximately two hours. The route is over hiking trails that are generally easy\, but uneven\, with rocks and roots underfoot. The terrain is up and down throughout\, over gentle hills. Hiking attire and closed footwear advised; walking poles are useful. Bring water and insect repellent\, as they are not supplied. Each session features a work of art or object that is new to view—whether a recent acquisition or a work newly installed in the galleries.  \nThe program begins in the Education Room at our Downtown Campus with a brief introduction and visual context before moving into the galleries for an extended exploration of the featured work. Guided by observation\, curiosity\, and conversation\, participants are encouraged to share ideas\, consider different perspectives\, and discover new connections together.  \nThis week for Artful Conversations  \nIn 2025\, CAM acquired two 2023 photographs by Matika Wilbur as part of the Museum’s Native Initiatives\, a project that culminated in a landmark exhibition of Wilbur’s work at the CAM Green. Wilbur’s work reshapes how Indigenous Peoples are represented across the United States\, centering contemporary Native identity and celebrating the vibrancy of Indigenous culture today.  \nPlease join CAM docent Maggie Rosa for an engaging conversation as she reflects on what these photographs reveal—about the photographer\, about the individuals portrayed\, and about the evolving stories they invite us to understand more deeply.  \nBorn and raised in England\, Maggie Rosa moved to the Chicago in 1968 to work as a research technician at the University of Chicago. During her eight years in Chicago\, she married Joe and obtained her PhD. The two of them did post-doctoral research at Yale and then moved to Cambridge to join the nascent biotech world. They eventually built a weekend home in Gloucester. In 2001 they “saw the light” and moved here permanently to participate in this great community. Maggie is an active volunteer in local organizations\, most recently the City Hall Restoration Commission\, Gloucester Education Foundation\, Cape Ann Museum\, and Generous Gardeners. As a Cape Ann Museum docent\, she serves as an ambassador for Gloucester by introducing visitors\, especially cruise ship visitors\, to Cape Ann’s history and culture. This class blends design fundamentals\, creative play\, and the rich history of Cape Ann’s iconic design collective. Referencing her unpublished book\, Design and How\, you’ll explore the principles of design that Virginia Lee Demetrios taught her students—selecting a theme and exploring it deeply through clarity of line\, rhythm\, repetition\, and pattern—and you will discover how her timeless ideas can elevate your own artistic voice. Each week builds your confidence as you sketch\, carve\, and print your way towards an original finished artwork.   \nPlease note: This class has four sessions.  \nMary Rhinelander is a professional artist with an MFA in printmaking. Gloucester is in her DNA\, starting with great-grandparents who spent summers on Eastern Point. She lives in East Gloucester\, in a yellow clapboard house once known as “The Summer Art House” where painter Theresa Bernstein and her painter/printmaker husband\, William Meyerowitz\, spent many decades (starting in 1924). Having purchased her home directly from their estate\, William’s etching press is still happily living in the sun-filled basement studio. Mary has had many solo and group shows and her work is in both public and private collections. She has painted murals\, designed logos and book covers\, illustrated for a variety of publications\, and taught students of all ages. In 2004 she founded Mermade Press\, a fine art card business. With a deep affinity for the Folly Cove Designers and Virginia Lee Demetrios in particular\, it has been Mary’s great pleasure to bring block printing workshops into Cape Ann’s public schools with the support of CAM and the Gloucester Education Foundation.  \nImage Credit: Mary Rhinelander. SUMMARY:Walking Tour: Historic Dogtown­ – A Walk Back in Time
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, October 18\, 2026\n10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.\nBabson Boulder Parking\nCherry Street\, Gloucester\, MA 01930\nCAM Members $15\, Non-Members $25.\nRegistration Required \nOn Cape Ann\, the name “Dogtown” conjures up many things—vast woodlands and trails; stone walls and cellar holes; tales of witches and widows; an ill-fated bullfighter; pastures\, picnics and blueberries; a sea of rocks. Dogtown is all of these things and more. But first\, it is a place where proud people once lived and worked\, at the center of Gloucester\, for nearly 150 years—until it became “Dogtown” and died out.  \nThis tour will take you down the main roads of this early settlement\, to meet some of the people\, see where they lived and hear their stories. You will learn how Dogtown got its name\, why people left\, and how it has changed in the 200 years since the last house came down. You will hear about writers and artists who were inspired here\, and reservoirs that were built here. Finally\, you will see some of the inspirational word-boulders along the trails that are the lasting legacy of entrepreneur and philanthropist Roger Babson (1875-1967)\, and a symbol of the enduring nature of this special place called Dogtown.  \nThe Historic Dogtown walking tour is almost three miles and will take approximately two hours. The route is over hiking trails that are generally easy\, but uneven\, with rocks and roots underfoot. The terrain is up and down throughout\, over gentle hills. Hiking attire and closed footwear advised; walking poles are useful. Bring water and insect repellent\, as they are not supplied. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 24\, 2026\n2:00 p.m. –  3:30 p.m.\nAuditorium\nDowntown Campus\n27 Pleasant Street\, Gloucester\, MA\nCAM Members $5\, Non-Members (Adult) $30 (Includes General Admission)\nAdditional price types are available upon checkout \nRegistration Required  \nCAM welcomes sculptor Robert Shure for an engaging gallery talk on the Seated Cat\, his newly installed bronze in the Museum’s renovated courtyard\, an enlargement of Katherine Lane Weems’ iconic work of the same name and modeled in 1941. Shure will reflect on his past work with Weems\, the artistic dialogue that emerged between their two cats\, and the meticulous sculptural process behind creating this magnificent piece for CAM’s campus. It is a chance to hear directly from the artist about the history\, craft\, and character embodied in this contemplative feline form. \nUpon graduating from college\, owner Robert Shure became an assistant at the traditional sculpture studio of Arcangelo Cascieri and Adio di Biccari. From the early 1970s through the 1980s\, Shure helped produce many of the public monuments\, sculptures\, memorials\, and restorations completed at the Cascieri-di Biccari studio. He became involved in all the specialties of the sculpture studio\, including designing monuments and portraits\, creating armatures\, mold-making\, casting in plaster\, creating and replicating architectural ornament\, and conserving and restoring plaster\, stone\, and bronze. As Cascieri and di Biccari gradually retired\, Shure continued the tradition of the sculpture studio. In 1990\, Shure moved the Cascieri-di Biccari studio to Woburn\, Massachusetts and renamed it Skylight Studios. It is one of the largest and most active studios of its type in the country. Robert is currently creating many significant public and private monuments and sculptures. He has accumulated over 40 years of hands-on experience in the field of sculpture. His expertise ranges from the design and creation of monumental sculpture in bronze and granite to the conservation and restoration of historical sculpture and architectural ornament.
