The Wonson Twins

The Wonson twins, William Newman Sawyer Wonson and Samuel Giles Wonson IV, were born in Gloucester in1843, sons of Samuel Giles Wonson and Elizabeth (Sawyer) Wonson. Their paternal grandfather was the first lighthouse keeper at Eastern Point and their extended family were important players in the 19th century fisheries on Cape Ann.

William and Samuel both spent their entire lives here on Cape Ann. William (who died in 1919) served in the Civil War with Company G of the Massachusetts 8th Infantry Regiment, and later worked on the Gloucester waterfront. Samuel married Belinda Friend in 1866 and had six children. Samuel also found work around the waterfront.
